In 1975 Mary Lucier did a great video performance piece that involved burning lines on a video camera sensor by panning it across a laser beaming at her from across the room -- the destruction of one expensive piece of technology by the misuse of another one. She wore a pirate eye patch on her left eye to prevent retinal burn, very dashing. Between swashes of the laser Mary zoomed in on audience members. This photo in
Ear Magazine shows me sitting in her concert at The Kitchen, wreathed in laser etchings.
